Best crypto banks for Germany

Germany is the largest single market for crypto banking in the EU. BaFin began authorising crypto-asset service providers under MiCA on 30 December 2024, and German users now have direct access to the same MiCA-passported platforms (Bitvavo, Kraken EU, Coinbase EU) plus domestic neobanks (N26 with crypto, Trade Republic) that have added crypto features under MiCA. EUR is the universal funding currency; SEPA Instant settles deposits in seconds at zero fee from challenger banks.

§ 01 REGULATORY OVERVIEW

Crypto-banking regulation in Germany

Crypto-asset service providers serving German residents must hold MiCA CASP authorisation (issued by a national competent authority — for German entities, BaFin; for passporting entities, AFM/CySEC/MFSA). Stablecoin issuers (USDC, EURC) must hold an EMI licence. Custody is supervised under MiCA Title V. The German tax treatment of crypto disposals follows § 23 EStG (private sale; tax-free after 1-year hold) — see the country tax page for current thresholds.

For the country tax treatment, see crypto taxes in Germany.

§ 03 GERMANY FAQ

Crypto banking in Germany — FAQ

Which crypto bank is best for German residents? +
Revolut (Bank of Lithuania licence + EU passporting) leads on banking integration; Nexo and Crypto.com lead on yield/coin-selection under MiCA CASP authorisation. Bitvavo (Dutch MiCA, AFM-licensed) is the lowest-fee EU exchange for German users. Pick by use case — see the ranked list.
Are deposits in crypto banks protected by Einlagensicherung? +
Only EUR fiat balances at fully-licensed credit institutions (e.g. Revolut Bank UAB) are covered by the EU Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to €100,000. Crypto holdings are NOT protected by Einlagensicherung — they're protected by segregated-custody rules under MiCA Title V, which is meaningfully different. Read each platform's regulatory_status carefully.
Can I use SEPA Instant to deposit at every crypto bank? +
Yes for EU-passported MiCA CASPs (Bitvavo, Kraken EU, Coinbase EU, Nexo, Crypto.com). Most settle the EUR deposit in under 10 seconds. Some non-EU platforms (offshore-licensed) require SWIFT or card deposits — check the per-platform funding methods.
Do German crypto banks file Steuerbescheinigung? +
Most don't. Revolut and a few EU-licensed platforms provide an annual transaction CSV export sufficient for Steuererklärung; for full Steuerbescheinigung you typically need a German broker (Trade Republic, Bison) or a tax-tooling integration (CoinTracking, Blockpit). Always check before tax season.
Is the Travel Rule enforced in Germany? +
Yes. The EU Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) implements the FATF Travel Rule with no de minimis threshold for VASP-to-VASP transfers as of 30 December 2024. Affects withdrawals from MiCA-licensed exchanges to external wallets — counterparty information is required.
