Best crypto banks for Italy

Italy is the second-largest EU economy and (alongside Germany and France) one of the three largest MiCA implementation markets. CONSOB (the securities regulator) and OAM (the dedicated VASP register operated by the Treasury) jointly oversee crypto-asset operators; MiCA CASP authorisation is now the canonical framework for new entrants. Major MiCA-passported platforms (Coinbase, Bitvavo, Crypto.com, Binance) all serve Italian residents; domestic banks (Intesa Sanpaolo, Banca Sella) have institutional crypto custody offerings. SEPA Instant settles EUR deposits across all Italian banks at zero fee.

§ 01 REGULATORY OVERVIEW

Crypto-banking regulation in Italy

Crypto-asset service providers serving Italian residents must hold MiCA CASP authorisation under the EU framework. The OAM (Organismo degli Agenti e dei Mediatori) maintained the legacy national VASP register; new entrants now go through MiCA CASP authorisation issued by CONSOB or via passporting from another EU national competent authority. Stablecoin issuance is supervised under MiCA Title III + III-bis. The Italian tax framework treats crypto disposals as taxable when the total portfolio exceeds €51,645.69 per the Legge di Bilancio 2023 — a 26% rate applies above the threshold; long-term holdings under threshold remain tax-free.

§ 03 ITALY FAQ

Crypto banking in Italy — FAQ

Which crypto bank is best for Italian residents? +
Revolut (Bank of Lithuania licence + EU passporting) leads on banking integration; Coinbase Italy (CySEC MiCA), Crypto.com Italy (MiCA CASP), and Bitvavo (AFM Dutch MiCA) lead on trading. Domestic Italian banks (Banca Sella, Intesa Sanpaolo) offer institutional crypto custody. Pick by use case from the ranked list.
How does the €51,645.69 crypto tax threshold work? +
Under the Legge di Bilancio 2023 framework, individuals' crypto holdings are taxed only when the total portfolio value exceeds €51,645.69 at any time during the tax year. Above the threshold, gains are taxed at a flat 26%. The threshold resets each year, and the rule applies to the highest single point — meaning even a brief peak above triggers the regime. Track values via per-platform CSV export plus tax-tooling (CoinTracking IT, Blockpit IT).
What's OAM and is it still required after MiCA? +
OAM (the Italian VASP register operated under Treasury supervision) was the national pre-MiCA framework — operators serving Italian residents had to register before being able to operate. MiCA CASP authorisation has now replaced OAM as the primary licensing framework; existing OAM-registered operators are transitioning to MiCA. New entrants apply directly for MiCA CASP.
Can I use SEPA Instant at every Italian crypto platform? +
Yes for EU-passported MiCA CASPs (Bitvavo, Kraken EU, Coinbase EU, Nexo, Crypto.com) and for Italian-banking-licensed entities (Revolut Bank UAB, Banca Sella). Most settle EUR deposits in under 10 seconds at zero fee. Some non-EU platforms still require SWIFT for larger deposits — check per-platform funding methods.
Is the FATF Travel Rule enforced in Italy? +
Yes. The EU Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) implements the FATF Travel Rule with no de minimis threshold for VASP-to-VASP transfers as of 30 December 2024. Affects withdrawals from MiCA-licensed exchanges to external wallets — counterparty information is required. Self-custody withdrawals may require ownership proof.
