Best crypto banks for Switzerland

Switzerland operates one of the most institutional-friendly crypto-banking jurisdictions globally. FINMA grants a dedicated banking licence for crypto-asset firms — Sygnum (Zurich, since 2019) and SEBA / AMINA (Zug, since 2019) hold full Swiss banking licences with crypto custody and trading scope. Sygnum and SEBA's depositor protection extends to CHF balances under the standard Einlegerschutz scheme (CHF 100,000). The Crypto Valley in Zug is home to most of Europe's largest crypto-native firms. SIC (Swiss Interbank Clearing) settles CHF transfers; SEPA Instant covers cross-border EUR.

§ 01 REGULATORY OVERVIEW

Crypto-banking regulation in Switzerland

Crypto firms serving Swiss residents are regulated under the FinSA (Financial Services Act) and FinIA (Financial Institutions Act); the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) Act (effective August 2021) added a dedicated DLT trading-venue licence. FINMA licences crypto-asset banks (Sygnum, SEBA / AMINA) under the standard Banking Act with extended scope for crypto custody. The Swiss Federal Council clarified in 2024 that staking rewards and yield income are taxable as ordinary income; capital gains on private crypto holdings are tax-free (cantonal rule, applies if not classified as 'professional trader'). VAT does not apply to crypto-to-crypto trades.

§ 03 SWITZERLAND FAQ

Crypto banking in Switzerland — FAQ

Which crypto bank is best for Swiss residents? +
Sygnum (Zurich, full FINMA banking licence, EUR + CHF + USD operating accounts) and SEBA / AMINA (Zug, full FINMA banking licence) lead on regulatory posture for institutional and high-net-worth users. For retail-focused trading, Bitcoin Suisse (FINMA-supervised SRO member) is widely used. International MiCA-passported platforms (Coinbase, Bitvavo, Kraken) also serve Swiss users via cross-border passporting under the EU framework.
Are deposits at Sygnum and SEBA protected by Einlegerschutz? +
Yes for CHF (and select fiat) balances — Swiss depositor-protection scheme (Einlegerschutz) covers CHF 100,000 per customer per bank for fiat deposits at fully-licensed Swiss banks. Crypto holdings are NOT covered by Einlegerschutz; they're protected by FINMA-supervised segregated custody arrangements. This is the materially better arrangement than most jurisdictions but still requires per-platform diligence.
Are crypto gains taxed in Switzerland? +
It depends. For private investors (the vast majority), capital gains on crypto disposals are tax-free under cantonal rules — the same treatment as private stock-trading gains. Holdings are subject to wealth tax (cantonal, 0.1-0.5% annually on year-end value). Yield income (staking rewards, lending interest) IS taxable as ordinary income at the federal + cantonal rate. If the Federal Tax Administration classifies you as a 'professional trader,' gains become taxable — the test considers trading frequency, debt financing, and use of derivatives.
How does the DLT Act licence differ from a banking licence? +
The DLT Act (effective August 2021) created a dedicated DLT trading venue licence under FinIA — designed for tokenisation venues and crypto exchanges that don't need full deposit-taking. It's a lighter regulatory framework than the full Banking Act licence Sygnum and SEBA hold. Most Swiss-headquartered crypto exchanges operate under FINMA SRO supervision (lighter still) rather than the DLT Act licence; the licence is mostly used by tokenisation platforms.
Can I use SIC and SEPA at Swiss crypto banks? +
SIC (Swiss Interbank Clearing) is the CHF inter-bank rail — used for domestic Swiss transfers. Sygnum, SEBA, and Bitcoin Suisse all settle SIC deposits in seconds during banking hours. For EUR cross-border, SEPA Instant covers most EU origin banks; for USD, SWIFT remains the default. International MiCA-passported exchanges (Bitvavo, Kraken EU) use SEPA Instant for EUR deposits from Swiss residents at zero fee.
