Common gotchas

  • Destination tag REQUIRED on every exchange deposit. This is the #1 way XRP funds get lost. Coinbase, Kraken, Crypto.com, Bitstamp, Uphold — ALL require the destination tag uint32 to credit YOUR account. Sending without the tag = funds credit the venue's hot-wallet pool. Recovery: contact support, provide tx hash + intended destination tag, wait 3-10 business days. Often recoverable but always painful.
  • 10 XRP base reserve on self-custody wallets. Each XRPL account requires a 10 XRP base reserve (unrecoverable until account closure) + 2 XRP per trustline / signer / NFT (XLS-20). Fund your self-custody wallet with at least 11-12 XRP minimum before activating. Most wallets show 'X XRP available' vs 'Y XRP balance' to reflect the reserve.
  • Failed transactions consume base fee on XRPL. If your tx has insufficient fee during a congestion spike (rare but happens), it can execute as 'failed' on-chain and still consume the base fee. Same as Ethereum + Solana; unlike Bitcoin where failed tx don't broadcast.
  • Tagless deposits to your own venue address. If you accidentally send XRP to YOUR OWN venue deposit address without the destination tag, it lands in the venue's pool. Even though it's 'your account' in the sense of the deposit address being assigned to you, the venue's accounting won't credit you without the tag. Same support-ticket recovery path.
  • OFAC + venue restrictions on XRP destination addresses. Some XRPL addresses associated with sanctioned actors are blocked by US CEX outbound flows. If your destination has any historical connection to a flagged address (even multi-hop), the CEX may flag + delay. Pre-clear large self-custody destinations.
  • Cross-chain XRP isn't really a thing (yet). Unlike Bitcoin (wrapped on Ethereum as WBTC), XRP has no widely-used wrapped variant on Ethereum or Solana. Cross-chain XRP exposure is via the spot ETF (in your brokerage account) or via XRP/USDC swap-and-bridge — but the latter is not a 'send' operation, it's a swap + bridge sequence with its own tax treatment.

Step-by-step

  1. Verify whether destination needs a destination tag. Exchange deposit: ALMOST CERTAINLY yes (the deposit screen will show address + destination tag). Self-custody wallet: no destination tag needed for personal wallets. Counterparty receiving for payment: ask them — small businesses may not use tags, exchanges do.
  2. Verify the destination address format. XRPL addresses: 'r' prefix (or 'X' prefix for X-addresses which encode the destination tag in the address itself). 25-34 chars typical for 'r' addresses, longer for X-addresses. Wrong format = transaction will reject at submission.
  3. Set the destination tag if required. Exchange withdrawal UI usually has a 'Destination Tag' field separate from address. Some venues auto-fill if you're sending to a known venue. If sending to your own exchange account, ALWAYS verify the tag matches your deposit screen.
  4. Do a test-send for first-time large sends. Any send > $1,000 to a new destination: test with $5-$20 first. Wait for the test send to credit correctly on the receiving side BEFORE sending the rest. XRP send finality is fast (10 sec) so the test-send doesn't add much delay.
  5. Confirm finality on the destination side. XRPL: 1-2 ledger closes (6-10 sec) is sufficient for finality. The XRPL doesn't have probabilistic finality like Bitcoin/Ethereum — once a ledger closes with your tx, it's final. Use livenet.xrpl.org or bithomp.com to verify the tx status.
  6. Record the send for tax purposes (if applicable). Self-to-self: no tax event; document transaction hash + destination tag. Payment for goods/services: taxable disposal at FMV. Cross-border ODL-corridor sends are institutional-only (banks); retail sends are standard XRPL transactions with normal tax treatment.
